Small neighbourhood museums in the spotlight

Elefsina, a human mosaic of populations that flocked to the city from all over the Greek world, has an important capital of local associations that contribute with their traditions, actions and their inexhaustible energy to the city’s cultural life. The Asia Minor Association (1932), the Pontian Association “New Trebizond” (1976) and the Folklore Association of “Adrachti” (2002), have managed to transform small museums in the urban fabric into vibrant places of memory.

Every afternoon, one of these three associations opens its doors and welcomes us on a tour of the spaces, collections and tastes of its special ancestors, as they are carefully preserved from one generation to the next. In collaboration with Iosif Hadjikyriakos, curator of thematic museums in Larnaca, we explore how a small neighbourhood museum from the margins comes to the centre of cultural interest, attracting visitors, researchers and audiences beyond the borders of the city and the local community.
