Saving Private Memory

There is a subtle (and important) difference between a memory and a remembrance. Throughout the years, the Eleusinians have chosen those narratives and events that are important to their common identity. The Sixth American Fleet, the poet Angelos Sikelianos, the dictator Theodoros Pangalos and the fearless submarine commander Vasilis Laskos regarded Eleusis as their home and the city is full of their presence. Guided by the actress Maria Kastani in this promenade walk we will meet some of the most interesting characters who have passed through Eleusis and heard their stories in the context of the urban and natural environment. From the old harbour to the historic church of Agios Georgios, we will get to know the most important landmarks of Eleusis and come to appreciate the city’s leading role in modern Greek history.
