“For the Artist”: Uniting and dividing things
Alexandros Mistriotis

Are artists part of their era? Do they represent or shape their era? Do they lead or follow? Do they form or are they formed by the audience? These are some of the legitimate questions that arise when begin to discuss the position of the art and the artist today; a controversial position that affects all of society and its dreams, hopes and fears. A position in constant flux, making these queries seem, not only difficult to tackle, but plain wrong. Because, it is not necessary to choose between two opposites. It seems that the “opposite” has to balance between them. Even from the time when there were no “artists”, their function certainly existed, and played a crucial role. Today, however, when historical time has accelerated and modernity seems to be exhausted, things bring to light a new dimension of art that is not ideologically organized. We now clearly see the relationship of art and time.
